coraliira was born from a deep appreciation for the intricate wax-resist dyeing techniques that have shaped Terengganu's cultural identity for centuries. Founded in 2018 by a collective of batik artisans and cultural enthusiasts, we established our studio in the historic Kampung Cina district of Kuala Terengganu, where traditional crafts continue to thrive.
The name "coraliira" reflects our connection to the coast and the delicate, organic patterns found in coral reefs—patterns that have long inspired batik designs throughout the Malay archipelago. Just as coral reefs support diverse ecosystems, we aim to nurture a community where traditional artistry can flourish alongside contemporary creative expression.
Our journey began when master batik artist Encik Rahman bin Ahmad partnered with textile designer Puan Nurul Huda to create a space where the centuries-old batik tradition could be experienced hands-on by visitors from around the world. What started as a modest workshop has grown into a comprehensive cultural retreat program, offering immersive experiences that go beyond simple craft instruction.
Today, coraliira serves as a bridge between past and present, hosting workshops that honor traditional methods while welcoming innovation. We work closely with established batik masters from across Terengganu and Kelantan, ensuring that authentic techniques are passed down through direct mentorship. Each retreat participant learns from artisans who have dedicated their lives to this craft, creating genuine connections to Malaysia's artistic heritage.
